I still remember the story of a Bedouin I met some twenty years ago near Marrakech. As I sipped the tea he had offered me, he spoke of his childhood, of nights spent by the fire, listening to his grandfather’s voice. He told me of the waves of the desert, how pure that water was, how it surged fiercely from the ground, spilling in azure currents over the sand.

I watched him as he spoke, his eyes lost in memories of something both real and imagined. "If you listen closely," he said, "you can still hear them."
