During a rhythmic gymnastics competition held in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, I captured this image using the ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) technique. I’ve written elsewhere about my interest in this approach—how it allows something quieter, more elusive, to emerge from within the precision of the discipline. It shifts the focus from performance to perception, from gesture to resonance.
Looking at the photograph, I have the impression that there is only one true athlete. The other presence feels like a simulacrum—a ghost, perhaps—reaching toward the secret of the movement, trying to grasp something that resists being fully understood.
This image is part of the series The Rhythmic Ghosts.
